DESCRIPTION
The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) oversee more than 450,000 acres of state parks and forests, beaches, bike trails, watersheds, dams, and parkways. DCR's mission is to protect, promote, and enhance the common wealth of natural, cultural, and recreational resources.

Between 1866 and 2003, more than 30 major government agencies and divisions were created that evolved to form the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, which was created in 2003.

Minutes of the Legacy Agencies of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, 1892-2003

This collection represents the official Minutes of some of those agencies. These Minutes span from 1892 to 2003, and encompass eight different agencies. These agencies are the Metropolitan Park Commission, Preliminary Board (1892-1893); Metropolitan Park Commission (1893-1919); Charles River Basin Commission (1903-1910); Metropolitan District Commission (1919-2003); State Forest Commission (1914-1919); Department of Natural Resources (1953-1975); Department of Environmental Management (1975-2003); and the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation Commission (1899-1967).
